Prvi maj – Međunarodni praznik rada

Prvog svibnja obilježavamo Međunarodni praznik rada, dan solidarnosti radništva i općenito radnih ljudi cijeloga svijeta. Svi mi jedva čekamo 1. svibanj, jer je to dan kada uživamo u dobrom društvu, dan kada nema nastave i kada većina ljudi ne radi. Trebalo se izboriti za takav dan, za što smo zahvalni radnicima iz 19. stoljeća.
Zbog teških radnih uvjeta koji su vladali u drugoj polovici 19. stoljeća radnici su se počeli buniti i organizirati štrajkove. Veliki štrajk koji je ostao zapamćen u povijesti izbio je u Chicagu 1.05. 1886 godine. U tom je štrajku sudjelovalo približno 40 000 ljudi. Radnički vođe štrajka istaknuli su zahtjeve radnika simbolizirane u 3 osmice: 8 sati rada, 8 sati spavanja i 8 sati kulturnog uzdizanja. Radnici su samo željeli humaniji i pravedniji odnos prema njima, njihove težnje su nažalost prerasle u borbu u kojoj je ubijeno šestero ljudi, ranjeno oko 50 te su mnogi demonstranti uhićeni. Radnici nisu odustajali od svojih težnji i 3.05. 1883.  policija je počela pucati na radnike u McCormick Reaper works factory i u tom stravičnom događaju 4 radnika je ubijeno, a mnogi su ranjeni. Međutim, tu nije kraj, čelnici sindikata slijedeći dan sazvali su masovni sastanak u Haymarket square-u kako bi protestirali protiv brutalnosti. Na tom je skupu bačena bomba pri čemu je mnogo sudionika bilo ozlijeđeno ili je poginulo. Radnici ni tada nisu odustali od svojih zahtjeva, već se pokret proširio stvarajući brojne organizacije s ciljem poboljšanja radnih uvjeta. 
Međunarodna radnička organizacija, koja je ujedno i prva radnička organizacija te vrste, proglasila je 1889. godine u Parizu (na stotu obljetnicu Francuske revolucije) 1. svibanj praznikom radničke klase. Crvena zastava postala je simbol radničke krvi koja je prolivena za ostvarivanje radničkih prava, a crveni karanfil postao je simbol radničkog bunta i ubijenih u Chicagu.
Međunarodni praznik rada obilježava se kao službeni praznik u više od 80 zemalja, a neslužbeno gotovo u cijelom svijetu.  Nekad se je praznik obilježavao velikim paradama i demonstracijama, koje su najčešće organizirali socijalistički, anarhistički i drugi lijevo orijentirani pokreti, a danas se praznik svodi većinom na organizirana druženja, roštiljanja i sportske aktivnosti.
Proslava 1.maja ima posebno značenje za sve radnike diljem svijeta, iako je tužno da i na taj dan mnogi ljudi moraju raditi. Radili ili ne ovaj dan zaslužuje poštovanje i proslavu, zato bez obzira na vrijeme, danas nemojte raditi već se opustite u dobrom društvu.
